Around the Area of Guesthouse Jūras Dzintars

The Jūras dzintars guesthouse is situated in Ainaži, a town in Northern Vidzeme. We invite you to discover not only the natural and historical sites available in Ainaži and its surroundings but also to visit museums and learn something new!

What to See and Visit in Ainaži

Ainaži boasts a rich and diverse history, with its name first mentioned in the 16th century. Initially, Ainaži was a small fishing settlement that gradually developed into an important regional center. The most significant growth occurred in the 19th century when Ainaži became a key shipbuilding hub and port, earning the title of the shipbuilding capital of Vidzeme. This period saw the establishment of numerous shipbuilding workshops, contributing to economic growth and attracting workers from the surrounding areas.

Today, Ainaži has preserved its historical charm and significance while actively participating in the preservation of its cultural heritage. The town maintains its historic character while evolving into an attractive tourist destination.

Ainaži Pier

The Ainaži Pier is a significant historical landmark reflecting the activities of the Ainaži port in the early 20th century, located right at the Latvia-Estonia border. Its original purpose was to create a narrow-gauge railway branch to facilitate the unloading and transportation of cargo from ships.

Nowadays, a well-maintained wooden path leads to the 596-meter-long pier, surrounded by the nature reserve “Randu Pļavas.” This area offers visitors a chance to enjoy both historical and natural beauty, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks and sightseeing.

Ainaži Lighthouse

Ainažu lighthouse, built in 1930, is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Latvian coast, designed to help ships safely navigate the Baltic Sea. Standing 20 meters tall, it is located near the Latvia-Estonia border. Although it no longer serves its original purpose, the lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction, offering panoramic views of the sea and surrounding area.

Randu Pļavas Viewing Tower

Established in 2006, the Randu Marsh features a trail and a birdwatching tower. The 1.4 km trail winds through meadows and dunes, covered with pine scrub and lowland vegetation. Wooden walkways alternate with natural paths, and the viewing tower provides an excellent opportunity to observe reed-dwelling birdlife or simply enjoy the tranquility of nature.

White Sun Memorial Stone

The “White Sun” memorial stone, created by sculptor Vilnis Titāns, honors Krišjānis Valdemārs, the founder of the Ainaži Maritime School. Unveiled in 1998, this stone is part of the sculptor’s project “Bridge of the Sun,” which also includes the environmental installations “Blue Sun” in Kolka and “Green Sun” in Strazde. The stone is adorned with a bronze line that crosses a world map, surrounded by logs decorated with Latvian symbols of strength, representing Valdemārs’ wish for Latvians to widely share their maritime heritage.

Firefighting Museum

At the Ainaži Firefighting Museum, visitors can learn about the history and work of firefighters since the establishment of the association. The exhibition “Shining Buttons, Helmets” features photographs, descriptions, restored hand and motor pumps, hand sirens, and fire-fighting vehicles and equipment displayed in the adjacent depot.

Maritime School Museum

The compact and idyllic town of Ainaži is known as the cradle of Latvian maritime culture, housing the Ainaži Maritime School Museum, a testament to the ancient maritime glory of the Latvian seafaring tradition. In the museum’s classroom, guests are welcomed by Captain Kristiāns Dāls, the head of the ancient maritime school. During your visit, you can learn about the construction of sailing ships, the life of sailors, and their tools, while feeling pride in Latvia’s maritime history and its brave seafarers.

Cruise on the "Valhalla" Cutter

A cruise on the “Valhalla” cutter offers a luxurious and unforgettable experience, perfect for celebrating special occasions such as birthdays or reunions with friends. It’s an ideal way to escape the daily hustle and enjoy stunning sunsets at sea.

LEDUS OGA Ice Creams and Sorbets

LEDUS OGA produces ice creams made from real milk and sorbets. In 2019, the company was awarded the title of “Salacgrīva Municipality’s Young Entrepreneur.” Located near the A1 highway and the coast, the production site is easily accessible. Ice creams can be purchased at the “Radīts Piejūrā” shop and at the production site, with delivery available in Rīga, Salacgrīva, Ainaži, and surrounding areas by prior arrangement.

Hiking Trails

One of the most beautiful sections of the Coastal Trail begins with the crossing of the Zaķupīte River. The route leads predominantly through sandy beaches with some rocky stretches, continuing along the stony Vidzeme coastline, where land projections meet small bays, revealing sandstone cliffs up to 4 meters high. Beyond Meleku Rags, the trail returns to sandy shores. The beach between Svētciems and Salacgrīva is overgrown, so the Coastal Trail navigates through forest paths winding between dune ridges. From Salacgrīva to Kuiviži, you can choose to walk along the sandy beach or through forest trails.

In the Randu Marsh section, from Kuiviži to Vēverupe, the Coastal Trail must be circumvented via forest paths on the eastern side of the A1 highway, before returning to the beach after Vēverupe and leading towards the Ainaži mole.

Cycling Trails

Enjoy an exciting journey along the Green Railways, which traverse picturesque landscapes and dense forests, transforming once viable railway routes into tranquil paths. These routes are perfect for cycling enthusiasts, hiking lovers, horse riders, and even skiers in winter. The paths are covered with natural gravel or forest trails and are clearly marked with signs.

Eel Fishing Trails in Salacgrīva

In Salacgrīva, the unique eel fishing method known as “murdu tacis” has preserved its traditions for centuries. This special fishing structure consists of a platform from which eel traps are submerged into the river’s current.

Every August, fishermen renew the trail using only ties, without nails or screws.

During the season, from July to early February, visitors can explore the eel trails through guided tours, which offer the chance to meet fishing masters, investigate the traps, watch a film, and enjoy freshly cooked eel. There are three eel trails on the Salaca River, with one located in Svētupe.
